Race Report- Tour of Tucker County (West Virginia)
Friend and BSM cycling elder, Sam Klontz and I headed east to the big mountains of northeastern West Virginia over Memorial Day weekend for one of the toughest road races in the US, the Tour of Tucker County. This race is exactly why I sat on my cat 2 upgrade, for the last thing I needed was a cat 1 ripping my legs off, the hills were plenty. Yes, I sandbagged. The race course promised a 53 mile route with two 1500+’ foot climbs and a massive 2000′ climb with the finish line at the top. You started in a valley and did two challenging circuits that covered the 1500 feet in two chunks, the final part at a brutal 2 miles of 8% grade. After the climb there was a beautiful stretch or ridge lines that one could not … Read More »
Spring Series Wrap Up (Cat 3 Report)
Team Hungry has proven itself to be a force to reckon with. As illustrated by our Cat 3 squad (Andrew, Michael, and a dash of Scott Pardi) we can, and will, race the shit out of some bikes. Look at us wrong during a race, and we’ll drop you in a quick second (kidding, yes?).
The Spring Series was only ten weeks long and our 3 squad podium’d 9 times! The races varied from extremely flat, fast courses to courses with hills so steep that some people literally decided to walk up.
Andrew and I both finished on the overall podium for the series and are really proud of our Spring results. This is a true attestation that consistent winter work (weather is not a factor) and strong teamwork (finally!) can turn into good results!

Germantown Race Report, May 15
Over 100 years ago, some sick sadistic Belgian decided that the best time of the year to have bike races is when the weather can be the most variable and dramatic. Ergo the Ohio Spring Series follows this tradition and two sundays ago this was yet again the case. The race time temperature was about 55 degrees and there was a light rain on and off the entire race. There are pluses and minuses to this. You need less water, but your tan lines suffer. Michael and I were lamenting how we look rather pale yet we’ve been racing consistently for nearly two months. To the non-spandex clad, tan lines are avoided or just ignored. For the cyclist, a painted on leg tan and glove/jersey tan lines on the arms are major badges of pride. Ye,s we look ridiculous when … Read More »
Mobo Bike Build-Off
We’ll pretty much race you at anything. Especially if it has ANYTHING to do with bikes.
Part of Mobo‘s annual fundraiser this year was a bike build where teams were challenged to assemble a bike with the highest integrity the fastest. Each team was given a bucket of parts, a stripped frame, and a few tools to do the job. Lined up against three other teams from bike shops, punk houses, and co-ops, Scott Pardi and I were ready to put our mechanical skills to the test.
We put our heads down, made a bunch of mistakes, took a few whiskey shots, and only twelve minutes later had built a ride that most people would have loved to own. Hot damn that was fast!
We were feeling pretty proud of our teamwork and the bike that we built. Especially when we … Read More »
St Peters Road Race
This past Saturday, Matt, Anne, Zack, and I all made the trip to the booming metropolis of St Peters, IN for one of the hardest races in the Ohio Spring Series. It featured a monster climb, tons of headwind, and a smaller, yet somehow rather painful second climb. By and far the best Hungry outcome was Zack getting a strong 8th place in the 4s race. The course is an absolute monster, so Zack’s place is definitely is his best of the year. Matt finished not too far behind Alex and Anne nearly pulled off a monster placing in the women’s 1/2/3 race .
I rode the cat 3 race and the field was super strong. Lots of mountain goats (climbers) showed up for the race, there were about 10 people in that race that could have won it. Every race … Read More »
OSRS Road Update
Man!! Has MC Chewy been killing it! 2 week back to back podiums at 2 of the windiest races I have ever seen. Last week was Vandervorts Corner. A guy from Abundance got away solo with 2 to go and he seem like he was long gone. Andrew and MC were in about a 12 man chase and what sounded like andrew had completely destroyed every last person in that group. The solo break worked and MC and Andrew’s chase was coming in. MC Came from about 6 wheels back and destroyed the sprint. Good Day for Hungry!
Yesterday was Spring Valley. A favorite course among many riders. I had Harbaugh in my field and Anne and Blair had each other. MC was all alone due to Scott nursing an injury and Andrew out of town. Needless to say I got … Read More »

OSRS #1 Deer Creek
Awesome first race for the hungry men’s and women’s squads. Anne and Blair both had an excellent showing in the women’s 123. Definitely going to be on the podium regularly. The Cat 5 men’s field was dominated early on with a 2 man break. Adam settled on finishing with the bunch. Nice work! The Cat 4 race was a strange race.. many failed break attempts lead to a tired bunch and a the group finally got away on lap 2. Zach, Matt, and myself remained silent in the rest of the bunch just trying to stay up right through the end. I’m just happy I finished with the group! The Cat 3 race sounded brutal from the words of Scott, MC, and Andrew. Andrew got away with 2 others on the last hill and that group stay away until the … Read More »
Support
My parents make fun of me for bike racing.
They roll their eyes when I talk about epic rides. They think its ridiculous when they hear how much money I spend on equipment. They see me and laugh at my tight fighting, obnoxiously colored uniform. I enjoy the criticism. For me, taking a comedic blow every once in awhile is a small price to pay for their undying support. My parents have earned the right to tease me. No matter what they say, I know that they always have my back when it comes to bike racing. And whether they like the sport or not, I know that it will always play some positive part in all of our lives.
I’d just like to thank my parents for a few specific things:
1 – Buying my first race bike! Freshman year of … Read More »
